The Challenge
A friend from Australia had a product with a real edge: headphones that don’t use your ears at all โ they send sound through your cheekbones, so a swimmer never has to remove a cap or goggles to hear music. Built for professionals, trainees, athletes. Technically, it was arguably better than the category leader.
That category leader was Shokz. Already established, already trusted, already the answer whenever someone searched “bone conduction headphones.” A better product isn’t automatically a winning one โ not against a brand people already know, and not on a bootstrap budget with no investor covering the gap.
There was no name yet. No visual identity. No Amazon presence, no website. Just a product that worked, and a founder who needed all of that built before a single customer could compare it to anything.
The Approach
Going up against an established brand on no budget means you can’t out-spend them โ you have to out-think them. Every decision, from the name to the Amazon listing sequence, got made with that constraint in mind: what actually earns trust from someone who’s never heard of you, standing next to a product they already trust?
I worked directly with the founder at every stage โ this wasn’t a brief handed to me and returned finished. Whatever I needed to know about the product, the swimmers who’d use it, the market, I asked, then built from there. The naming, the identity, the way the brand would look across Amazon and the website โ all of it shaped by conversations, not assumptions.
The Amazon listing carried the heaviest weight. An unfamiliar product competing against a household name doesn’t get the luxury of a slow build โ it has a few images and seconds to explain what bone conduction even is, and why this version deserves the click over the name people already recognize.
The result
Drip-Fly launched โ brand, Amazon store, and website all live โ and it’s generating sales, bootstrapped, with no outside funding, in a market where the competition already had the trust advantage.
